It's not lack of interest. It's the time-to-value ratio. A proper competitive teardown takes 4–6 hours the first time. The weekly monitoring version still takes 90 minutes — and that's 90 minutes you're spending not building, not selling, not talking to customers.

Why Competitive Intelligence Gets Neglected

High signal (track weekly):

- Job postings in specific functions (a flood of sales hires signals a go-to-market shift)
- Content published (topics reveal positioning bets)
- Fundraising announcements
- Key executive hires or departures
Medium signal (track monthly):
- Keyword movements (which terms are they going after or losing?)
- Backlink gains (who's writing about them?)
- G2/Capterra review trends (emerging complaints or praise patterns)
- Partner and integration announcements
Low signal (track quarterly):
- Deep positioning analysis
- Full product walkthroughs
- Investor narrative (what story are they telling?)
The 2-Hour Weekly Workflow
Monday Morning: Brief Scout (15 minutes)
Each Monday, send Scout a structured research brief for the week. The brief template:
Competitors to analyse this week: [Lindy AI, Sintra AI, Relevance AI]
For each, check and report on:
1. Any new product features or pricing changes since [last Monday's date]
2. Blog posts or social content published in the last 7 days
3. Job postings added in the last 7 days (note any unusual function spikes)

Output format:
- Executive summary (2–3 sentences per competitor, highest-signal changes only)
- Feature changelog (bullet list, any new capabilities announced)
- Positioning notes (has their messaging shifted? New keywords being used?)
- Signal rating: HIGH / MEDIUM / LOW (your assessment of competitive urgency)
Timeframe: Last 7 days only. Skip anything older.
You write this brief once, save it as a template, and update the dates each week. Total time: 5 minutes once the template exists.
Monday Afternoon: Scout Returns the Report (automated)

The output: a structured intelligence brief, one section per competitor, formatted exactly as specified. No raw links dump, no "here's everything I found" data flooding.
Tuesday: Read, Rate, Act (45 minutes)
The intelligence is only valuable if it changes something. Your Tuesday review has three moves:
Read the brief. 15–20 minutes. You're looking for anything in the HIGH signal tier.
Rate each finding. For every notable item, assign one of:
- Watch — interesting but not urgent; add to monthly review log
- Respond — this affects our roadmap, messaging, or positioning; needs a decision this week
- Move — this is an opportunity opening or threat materialising; needs immediate action
Log and action. High-signal items go into your strategy log with a date and your assessment. RESPOND and MOVE items go onto your weekly agenda.
Monthly: Deep Dive (60 minutes)
Once a month, Scout runs a deeper analysis on your top 2–3 competitors:
- Full keyword gap analysis (which terms are they ranking for that you're not?)
- Product positioning map (how has their messaging evolved over the last 90 days?)
- Review analysis (what are customers repeatedly praising? What are they complaining about?)

This is the strategic layer that turns weekly monitoring into longitudinal intelligence.
How to Brief Scout for Maximum Output Quality
The single biggest variable in AI research quality is the brief. Vague briefs produce vague reports.
Good brief elements:
- Specific competitor names (not "our main competitors")
- Specific time windows ("last 7 days," not "recent")
- Specific output format ("executive summary + bullet changelog," not "a summary")
- Specific signal sources ("check G2 and Capterra," not "check review sites")
Bad brief elements:
- Open-ended scope ("tell me everything about Lindy")
- No time bounds ("what have they been up to lately?")
- No format specification ("write me a report")
- No priority guidance ("everything matters equally")
The difference in output quality between a precise brief and a vague one is not marginal. It's the difference between a usable intelligence brief and a document you won't read twice.
Building a Competitive Baseline
The workflow above is for ongoing monitoring. Before starting it, you need a baseline — a point-in-time snapshot of each competitor that subsequent weeks are measured against.

- Messaging and positioning (what problem are they solving, for whom?)

With a baseline in place, the weekly monitoring becomes a diff exercise — what changed? — rather than starting from scratch.
Turning Intelligence Into Decisions
Competitive intelligence that doesn't change anything is expensive reading. Build a simple translation step:
After each week's review, ask three questions:
- Does this change our roadmap priority? (They just shipped the feature we were planning for Q3 → do we accelerate, differentiate, or deprioritise?)
- Does this change our messaging? (They're leaning into "AI employees" language → do we own something more specific?)
- Does this reveal an opportunity? (Customers are complaining about their onboarding → can we make our onboarding a genuine differentiator?)
Most weeks, the answer to all three is "no." But one week in five, there's something that genuinely shifts your thinking. That's the week the workflow pays for itself.
The goal isn't to obsess over competitors. It's to never be surprised by them.
